A zinc etching that was created in 1910 by Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada and popularized by the legendary painter Diego Rivera, who also happened to be Frida Kahlo’s husband, La Catrina was intended as political and social satire, mocking those who pretended to be rich while starving. She became a symbol of the Mexican Revolution and of Dia de los Muertos, the time-honored celebration of death and life.
